Windsor Police Lt. Frank Ratzlaff said officers arrest ed 31-year-old Jonathan Van Clark Jr. following a traffic stop just off King Street. A report by Windsor Police Officer Jessie Mizelle said he was driving on Carson Lane when he encountered a vehi cle driven by Clark. The offi cer knew the driver’s license was suspended and initiated a traffic stop near Bojangles. Once Officer Mizelle reached the window of the car driven by Clark, he smelled the odor of mari juana. “Officer Mizelle asked Mr. Clark to step away from the vehicle and after an initial delay, he complied,” Chief Justin Jackson said. Officer Mizelle was joined at the scene by Chief Jack- son, Bertie County Sheriff’s Cpl. Harris Williams and Lt. Kevin Johnson. Once Clark was detained, officers searched his ve hicle and found narcotics and weapons in the vehicle. The weapons confiscated in clude a 9mm Clock, an AR-15 Palmetto and a Taurus .41 Magnum revolver. Officers also found marijuana, pills and drug paraphernalia. The Bertie County Commissioners were presented the audit presentation for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2020 on Mon day. The presentation left the commission board with some questions, and a work session scheduled to make some changes to incon sistencies. Greg Adams, of Thompson, Price, Scott, Adams & Co., P.A., gave a look at some of the things the audit discov ered. The total revenue for Bertie County during the 2020 fiscal year was $25,324,669. The total expenditures (capital outlay expenditures) was $26,459,383. This year’s event is Saturday. Relay For Life is Saturday BRANDICE HOGGARD Staff Writer WINDSOR - Don’t forget Relay for Life this Saturday, August 21. Relay for Life is Saturday, Au gust 21 from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Bertie High School. This will be a drive up and drive through for luminaries event for the second year in a row due to the abundance CO- VID caution and concerns. If ones attending choose to leave their vehicle the Relay for Life committee is asking those to please wear a mask and so cial distance from one another. Line-up for the event will be held start at 7:15 p.m. in the Bertie Middle School parking lot. The parade of vehicles will then make its way to Bertie High School using the service road between the two schools. Team participants are be ing urged to decorate their ve hicles with the theme of their team, along with survivors be ing urged to put a sign on their vehicle with the number of years of survivorship. Teams along with survivors that have decorated or made signs for their cars are encouraged to join the parade. There will be a series of events following the parade for the ones attending Relay for Life. B&E DJ Services will be playing music at the event. See RELAY, A5 Fatal shooting will be reviewed by District Attorney Asbell awaiting written reports THADD WHITE Bertie Ledger-Advance BUENA VISTA - The decision on whether or not to file charges in a shooting death last week lies in the hands of the district attorney. Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said his office is wrapping up its investiga tion into the shooting death of 34-year-old James Earl Clark Jr. Clark was shot and killed approximately two miles from Buena Vista on Monday, Aug. 9. Sheriff Holley said at the time Bertie County dispatch ers received a call at approx imately 9 p.m. that shots were fired and a person was injured. They immediately dispatched medical per sonnel and deputies to the scene. “When they arrived, they found Mr. Clark was de ceased,” Sheriff Holley said.
